Australia has some of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world which makes regular examinations a vital part of your healthcare.

Our experienced general practitioners provide thorough screenings and minor procedures in a comfortable clinical setting on Brunswick Street.

About our skin check services

At Fitzroy North Medical Clinic we take a systematic approach to your skin health. Our doctors utilise dermoscopy which is a specialised magnification tool to see beneath the surface of the skin. This allows for a much more accurate assessment of moles and spots than the naked eye alone.

Early detection is the most effective way to manage skin cancer. Our goal is not just to identify concerns but to provide you with the education needed to monitor your own skin effectively between professional visits.

When should you book an assessment?

While an annual professional skin check is recommended for most adults you should book an appointment promptly if you notice any changes using the ABCDE guide:

  • Asymmetry: One half of a mole does not match the other.
  • Border: The edges are irregular blurred or notched.
  • Colour: The spot has multiple colours or has changed shade.
  • Diameter: The spot is larger than 6mm although some cancers are smaller.
  • Evolving: The mole is changing in size shape or starts itching or bleeding.

You should also consider more frequent checks if you have a personal or family history of skin cancer or a history of significant sun exposure.

What we provide at the clinic

Our clinic features a dedicated treatment room which allows us to manage most concerns onsite without the need for an external referral. Our services include:

  • Full body examinations: A head to toe check of all skin surfaces.
  • Targeted spot checks: A focused look at a specific mole that is worrying you.
  • Cryotherapy: Using liquid nitrogen to treat precancerous sun spots or warts.
  • Biopsies and excisions: Surgical removal of suspicious lesions for pathology testing or treatment.
  • Post care: Wound management and suture removal following procedures.

Important information for your appointment

Appointment Length A standard skin check takes 15 minutes. However if you have a high number of moles or require a minor procedure like a biopsy a longer appointment or a follow up visit will be necessary.

How to Prepare To ensure the doctor can see your skin clearly please remove all makeup foundation and nail polish before your visit. We also recommend avoiding fake tan for at least one week prior to your appointment.

Fees and Billing We are a private billing practice. A standard consultation fee applies for the check up. If a biopsy or excision is required there will be additional out of pocket costs for medical consumables and the use of the procedure room. Your doctor will discuss these costs with you before starting any treatment.
