Intravenous iron infusions provide an efficient way to treat iron deficiency and anaemia when oral supplements are inadequate or poorly tolerated.

Our clinic provides medically supervised infusions administered by our doctors and nursing team in a professional environment.

About our iron infusion service

Iron is an essential mineral that your body needs to produce haemoglobin which helps red blood cells transport oxygen throughout the body. When your iron stores are depleted it can lead to iron deficiency anaemia which often causes persistent fatigue weakness and shortness of breath.

An iron infusion delivers a concentrated dose of iron directly into your bloodstream through a vein. This method bypasses the digestive system entirely which allows for rapid replenishment of your iron stores and avoids the common gastrointestinal side effects often associated with oral iron tablets.

Common reasons to consider an infusion

An iron infusion may be recommended by your doctor if:

  • You have been formally diagnosed with iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia via a recent blood test.
  • You cannot tolerate oral iron supplements due to side effects such as severe nausea or constipation.
  • Oral iron supplements have not successfully raised your iron levels over a period of time.
  • You have an underlying medical condition that prevents your gut from properly absorbing iron.
  • You require a rapid increase in iron levels under medical advice such as prior to surgery or during the later stages of pregnancy.

The treatment process

To ensure patient safety and clinical appropriateness receiving an iron infusion at Fitzroy North Medical Clinic is a structured process:

  1. Initial GP Consultation: You must first see one of our doctors to review your recent blood test results. The doctor will confirm if an infusion is clinically appropriate for you and provide you with a prescription for the iron medication.
  2. Pharmacy Collection: You will need to take this prescription to a pharmacy to purchase the iron medication. You must bring this medication with you to your scheduled infusion appointment.
  3. The Infusion Appointment: On the day of your procedure a health professional will insert a small cannula into a vein in your arm. Our nursing team will then administer the iron drip. The infusion process itself generally takes 15 to 20 minutes.
  4. Observation Period: Following the infusion you are required to remain in the clinic for a mandatory 30 minute observation period so our team can monitor your vital signs.

Important information for your appointment

Appointment Length Please allow up to 60 minutes for your infusion appointment. This timeframe includes setting up the equipment administering the medication and completing the mandatory 30 minute observation period.

How to Prepare You do not need to fast before an iron infusion. Please eat your normal meals and ensure you drink plenty of water prior to your appointment because being well hydrated makes it easier for the team to locate a suitable vein.
